Responsibilities

The Scientific Computing and Imaging (SCI) Institute at the University of Utah invites applications for one post-doctoral researcher for interdisciplinary work in scientific visualization. The successful candidate will perform research in scientific visualization and work closely with SCI Institute researchers and external collaborators to integrate research into SCI Institute software applications and apply this software to compelling problems in science and engineering.

The SCI Institute is seeking a highly talented and committed individual with a demonstrated ability to work well with minimal supervision in a multi-disciplinary research environment. The successful candidate will contribute to the Institute's world-class research and software development in scientific visualization and have the opportunity to develop their research, publication, and presentation skills under mentorship from established faculty investigators.

Non-Technical Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills are mandatory. A willingness to collaborate in a highly diverse, multi-disciplinary environment is also essential.

The SCI Institute: The SCI Institute is a world-class research institute located within the new Warnock Engineering Building on the University of Utah campus. We are a highly dynamic, driven group of over 135 faculty, staff, and students.

The overarching goals of the SCI Institute's scientific computing research are to create new techniques, tools, and systems, by which scientists may solve problems affecting various aspects of human life. We believe that to advance the state-of-the-art and create meaningful computational solutions for such complex systems, one needs to advance research in a number of areas within scientific computing, including: visualization, simulation, and modeling.

Furthermore, for this algorithmic and software research to have a real impact outside of scientific computing and computer science, these components must be integrated with data and application specific knowledge within intuitive software systems, problem solving environments (PSEs) or computational workbenches.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in computer science or a closely related field
• Expert knowledge in scientific visualization, particularly with applications to uncertainty visualization, multi-field visualization, GPU techniques, large-scale visualization, and/or topological methods in visualization.
• Strong mathematical skills/knowledge.
• Advanced programming skills in C++, OpenGL, and scripting languages
• Experience with large software development projects is a plus
